Fort Laramie (founded as Fort William and then known for a while as Fort John) was a significant 1. Laramie River and the North Platte River in the upper Platte River. Valley in the eastern part of the U. S. state of Wyoming. It was founded in the 1. It sat at the bottom of the long climb leading to the best and lowest crossing point at South Pass into western descending valleys and so was a primary stopping point on the Oregon Trail. Along with Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River, the trading post and its supporting industries and businesses were the most significant economic hub of commerce in the region. Fort William was a private fur trading post founded by William Sublette in 1. In 1. 84. 1 it was purchased by the American Fur Company and renamed Fort John. In 1. 84. 9 it was purchased and its operations were taken over by the United States Army to protect the many wagon trains of migrant travelers on the Oregon Trail, and hence the subsidiary co- located northern emigrant trails which split off further west such as the California and Mormon trails. The middle reaches of the Mormon trail stayed on the north banks of the Platte and North Platte River and merged with the other emigrant trails heading west over the continental divide from Fort John- Laramie. The name Fort Laramie came into gradual use, likely as a convenient shortening of "Fort John at the Laramie River". The remaining structures are preserved as the Fort Laramie National Historic Site by the National Park Service. History[edit]. Interior of the original Fort Laramie as it looked prior to 1. The original fort was constructed in the 1. William Sublette recovered from the wounds received after the Rendezvous of 1. Battle of Pierre's Hole — during the boom period of the overland fur trade and situated near the rivers junction so the fort commanded a broad plain with water on two sides forming in effect, a partial natural moat. The nearby confluence of the North Platte's waters from two smaller, safer, noticeably more shallow streams to cross in that era without bridges made the location a convenient destination for any travelers on what later became the northern overland emigrant trails following the North Platte River west from Nebraska. With the opening of the Mormon Trail on the north bank of the Platte and North Platte, the fort served as a trail merge junction for west bound travelers and acted as a common intermediary trailhead anchoring one way- point roughly a quarter of the way to either California or Oregon on the famous Oregon Trail. To the west, the common trail leaving Fort John- Laramie later spins- off the south jogging Mormon and California trails further west, and the road to the Rogue River Valley while the main trail transits northwest to Oregon's Willamette Valley and Oregon City. One of the early principal owner- trappers was William Sublette, and the fort was therefore called Fort William.[5] for a period of time until it was sold to the American Fur Company in 1.
It was later named Fort John after John B. Sarpy, a partner in the American Fur Company which acquired the property, and that was the name given the destination during the early days of the surge in migration beginning in the political settlements with Mexico and Great Britain in 1. The 1. 84. 6 treaties established new desirable stable western territories just after viable routes west had become well published. By the time the westward migration by occasional wagon trains along the Oregon Trail became regular annual flood of migrants, the U. S. Army had become tenants in the fort as well. The fort was located along the northward running Laramie River just south of its mouth out- letting onto the North Platte River. The fort's site is located on the opposite bank of the location of the town of Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and both were later renamed to match the rivers eponym. Fort Laramie WyomingFort John (Fort Laramie) was originally built of logs in 1. This digital reconstruction from a National Park Service/Cy. Ark project is based on archaeological data, descriptions, and illustrations from the period when the Fort still stood. It shows the south and east facades of the high- walled Fort John, which as a private trading post was fortified to prevent theft rather than out of fear of an attack. Fort John fell into disuse following the military takeover of the Fort in 1. Geographically the site is situated just east of the steeper, much more challenging, steadily climbing foothills terrain to the west (sometimes called "High Plains") that ascends to the east side of the Rocky Mountains proper. The ascent beginning there was one of only a few roadways capable of navigation by wagons piercing the Continental divide and reaching the west slopes of that range along the network of river valleys connecting to the far west via South Pass near the head waters of the North Platte. The strategic site on the eastern plains offered large grazing areas to rest up draft animals before the ordeal of the long climbing trails and also places for people to set up camps, do laundry, and heal before beginning anew the rigors of the westward trail. In 1. 84. 5 the nearby Fort Bernard was established about 8 miles (1. North Platte River in hopes of cutting into the growing Emigrant Trail trade with western bound wagon trains. This much smaller fort undersold the Laramie trading operation, and did excellent business, as well as offered a connection south via a crude mule- train road to the Santa Fe Trail via Colorado. Fortunately for Fort Laramie, Fort Bernard burnt down in 1. Only a few years later the transcontinental railway joined the two American sea coasts and the heyday of long perilous overland travel along the Emigrant Trails by half- a- million a year began to decline. Frontier army post[edit]. Fort Laramie, 1. 85. By Samuel C. Mills. This year, gold was discovered at Cherry Creek near Denver, prompting the Colorado gold rush. Even at a distance of more than 2. Denver, Fort Laramie became one of these miners' major connections to the world back east. The fort was purchased from Bruce Husband, a member of the American Fur Company, for $4,0. June 1. 84. 9 by U. S. Army Lt. Daniel P. Woodbury on behalf of the United States Government. Three companies of cavalry arrived at the fort that same month, and Company ‘G’, 6th Infantry, which was the post’s permanent garrison for many years, arrived on August 1. The fort was taken over by the Army largely to protect and supply emigrants along the emigrant trails. In 1. 85. 1, the first Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed, resulting in relatively peaceful relations between the whites and the Native Americans during the 1. Grattan massacre of 1. Second Lieutenant. John Lawrence Grattan. During the increasing strife of the 1. Fort Laramie was never seriously threatened by Indian attacks during the quarter- century of intermittent warfare sparked by the Grattan massacre. However, a number of civilians were killed in the immediate area and their property destroyed or stolen during this period of hostilities on the plains. The last known death occurred in March 1. Big Bitter Cottonwood Creek.[8]The earliest surviving photograph of Fort Laramie, taken in 1. Samuel C. Mills, shows the remains of the old adobe walled fur trade fort (Fort John) flanked by a cluster of scattered wood and adobe buildings around the parade grounds. The Civil War, 1. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1. Fort Laramie were withdrawn to fight the Confederate States Army in the east. To take their place, a series of volunteer regiments soon arrived at Fort Laramie, including the 1. Ohio Cavalry, serving until they were mustered out in 1. Between October 1. On Christmas night in 1. John "Portuguese" Phillips ended his historic horseback ride at Fort Laramie after riding 2. Powder River. "Lt. William J. Fetterman's entire unit had been killed in a fight with the Sioux under Red Cloud," and Phillips arrived at Fort Laramie to summon help for Fort Phil Kearny. Legend maintains that Phillips' thoroughbred horse dropped dead upon arriving at the fort, though it is unclear as to whether Phillips kept the same mount for the entire ride. Whatever the particulars of his ride, Phillips did cross hostile Indian country, and most of the journey took place during a brutal Wyoming blizzard. In the late 1. 86. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills touched off another period of conflict with the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne during the Great Sioux War of 1. During this period of conflicts, Fort Laramie served as a major staging point for supplies and troops. Final years[edit]After the completion of the transcontinental railroad, the fort's importance gradually decreased as fewer wagon trains were formed to take the various trails west and regional Amerindians were pacified; it was decommissioned in 1. How comfortable is it to get some work done? How comfortable is it to hang out and relax with the morning paper? For while the coffee itself is important, if it were the most important part of a coffee shop, I'm afraid, Mc. Donalds and 7eleven might be the Shangrilla of coffee.
But seriously, I am not a fan of the overly strong Starbucks coffee that gives me a heart burn every time I take a swig. Rather, I prefer light, tasty coffee, a la Dunkin Donuts. So when it comes to coffee shops, I prefer to rate it on "ambiance, attitude and allure". I think I should patent this - the 3 A's. Anyway, Swork has all of the above. They have free Wi- Fi, ample tables for singles and accessible power outlets to juice those laptops. They have great outdoor seating as well for those babysitting their dogs or those interesting in people watching. Inside, they have a couple of computer terminals for pay- as- you- go use. So it serves as a decent internet cafe. But bring your own laptop, buy a coffee and you will get free Wi- Fi. So why the 4 stars? Well, the coffee is still a part (albeit a small part) of the experience and it does not measure up. It is way too strong (even their breakfast blend is strong). Mud Hen Tavern. Matthew R. rated. I recently moved to the area and this place is just a few blocks away. Happy to say, it's become one of my neighborhood joints. I typically stick with the small plates since they're great to share with my significant other. Our favorites so far have been the fried oysters, the chicken and waffle croquettes, the spinach pierogi, the pumpkin ravioli and of course, the kaya toast. I'm all about the kaya toast and we've been known to get two orders on occasion. Also, and to pretend like we're being healthy, we'll order something green, such as the (crispy) brussels sprouts or the house salad. They have a terrific drink menu with cocktails that are too difficult or time consuming for me to make at home, (which is what I look for in a drink list). I can make my own, great old fashioned. I like trying a new drink every time I go. They also have a nice wine list when I'm in the mood for a glass. The service has always been great and the staff has always been friendly. I would recommend making a reservation before going since seating fills up pretty fast. Otherwise, get there once they open for dinner, like we usually do, and seating shouldn't be an issue. Peet's Coffee & Teajenniefang rated. Wow. I'll admit, I have shyed .. Wow. I'll admit, I have shyed away from here just because it kind of looked a little corporate coffee- ee. Well, whatever it is, they serve up good coffee and awesome customer service. I'll warn you, not a lot of electical outlets here- when I asked about plugging in my laptop, the staff here went on a mission. When they were all taken, they offered an extension cord from the back bar. They said we could move tables. There happened to be an empty table near said back bar, but when the extension cord and my laptop didn't work, the staff climbed under the counter to see if they could make the cord stretch. It did. Viola. The barista on staff was great- double- checked with me if my in- house coffee size was okay, if I didn't like my milk choice, let her know and she would redo, the works. Apologized to ME because of the weird tipping- can't tip on a credit card. She apologized that they did not have a workable system on a credit card. I am impressed. I hope I see this staff again. Very customer oriented. Very rare to get this level of interest in most coffee places! Grace Bridal Couturenew. I called Loyce and talked to her on the phone twenty to thirty minutes. Simply talking to her on the phone IMMEDIATELY put me at ease. She has the bubbliest personality- so energetic yet calming. When I arrived at her studio, she greeted me with, “Hey Girlie” and a big hug. Then and there, I knew everything was going to be OK. I showed her several pictures and explained what I like about each dress. She came up with an idea of how to create my vision into my perfect dress. She was so patient and really listened. She knows bridal gowns inside and out! She guided me through the process of choosing the color, fabrics, style, etc. I changed my mind about a few details here and there, but she never complained. I was so stressed out and constantly losing weight, that every time I’d to for a fitting she would had to take the dress in. I really don’t know how she deal with us crazy brides. She stayed up many nights sewing my gown and train as they were 9. She also created my beautiful veil, 1. Starbucksdavidcox. This Starbucks is my favorite .. This Starbucks is my favorite one downtown. Even though there were two Starbucks locations closer to my work I always ended up walking to this one because they always got my drink of choice absolutely perfect everytime. Starbucks wants your experience and your drink to be exactly the same at every location you go to. This does not happen and I cannot imagine they aren't aware of it. I order an iced green tea latte a lot of the time. Sometimes they shake it, sometimes they stir it, sometimes it has milk, sometimes it's all water (blegh!), sometimes it's sweetened just right, unsweetened or way too sweet, etc, etc. You get the point. At this location they always get it right and I am so glad someone knows what they're doing! I've also ordered green teas, iced coffees and caramel macchiatos here and they all end up tasting like they're supposed to. Also, the people are really nice. Rarely do I have a bad customer service experience here. Way to go Starbucks on Fig! You always make my day that much better. San Antonio Winery. Howard S. rated. We went to Clifton's tonight and found it really underwhelming. The atmosphere is interesting - the faux woodland diorama thing makes it like a hipster Rainforest Cafe. Some of the place was clearly renovated with care, while other parts appear half done. Most of the floors were not open to the public tonight, so we were stuck on floors 1 and 2 (got to go up to the front of 3 for about 1. The decor in the center by the giant tree is cool, but it looked better on the higher floors. The food is.. fine? I guess? Not bad, not great. We originally wanted to get into the new Tiki section, but it was invite only tonight, which wasn't advertised anywhere - and only some of the staff knew about it. The basement bathrooms were so bad: one stall out for busted (overstuffed) toilet, one stall closed with a laptop on the floor of it, a third stall working, and a fourth with no toilet paper. Overall, not super impressed. The Village Idiot. Matthew R. rated. I love this place. We go here at least once every two weeks or so and try our best to get one of the large booths by the front windows. Great place to have one of the best Bloody Mary's in town on a warm Saturday afternoon. I love the menu - it's not huge, but what they do offer is usually fantastic. I dream of their mussels with bread sops, the brussel sprouts with bacon would make a few vegetarians go back to the dark side and the savory pies take me back to London. They also feature a great beer menu plus all sorts of interesting cocktails. My favorite drink is the Ginger Top - a glorious amber beer topped with ginger beer. I had my 4. 0th birthday party here a few weeks ago in the back room and the chef, managers and staff went above and beyond in terms of helping me plan and prep. It was the best bang for our buck and our guests had a fabulous time. In a nutshell: great food, great staff and never a negative experience. Mc. Connell's Fine Ice Cream. Yvonne L. rated. Located at the center area of Grand Central Market, Mc. Connell's was the only ice cream vendor among all. I was here with some friend on a typical Saturday. The wait time was about 2. All their ice flavors were listed on a board above your head and there were about 1. Some of them seemed to have unique combinations, such as Churros Con Leche and Earl Grey Tea & Butter Biscuit. Definitely ask for samples if you're first- timer. The staffs were very friendly and never hesitated to give you good, spoonful amount of ice cream to try out. My favorites were the Eureka Lemon Marionberries and the Earl Grey Butter Biscuit! The two scoops ice cream on cone came out to be around $8, but the excitement and enjoyable moment were priceless. The main parking lot at Grand Central Market can be pricy. Daily Maximum is $2. So park somewhere else nearby (normally $8- 1. Grace Bridal Couturelog.
